The Clearwater Threshers bullpen star Sam Walls was promoted to AA Reading today. Sam had been spectacular for the Threshers this year after missing the entire 2007 season with an injury. He had given up just 3 earned runs all season in 33.1 innings of work, and had not given up a single run in over a month.
We wish nothing but the best for Sam, though we will certainly miss his arm out of the pen in Clearwater.
The move leaves the Threshers’ roster at 23 players, two shy of the 25 player roster limit. This should mean that we can anticipate at least a couple more roster moves soon. With the draft having just past and the first-half of the South Atlantic League coming to a close I would expect a pitcher or two from Lakewood to head to Clearwater. At the top of my wish list would be some sorely needed starting pitching. Chance Chapman and Drew Naylor have both had good years at Lakewood and I would expect at least one if not both to be moved soon. Chapman seems the most likely candidate base on his age, but I would not be unhappy or surprised to see both in Clearwater.
