The Second Half Starts With a Fizzle

Well the second half of the season started tonight with the team coming off of a three game winning streak to end the first half. They were looking to carry that momentum into tonight’s game and get off on the right foot in the second season of 2008. Unfortunately that was not the case.

Kris Benson got a rehab start for the team and was shelled in the first inning. He gave up five runs on three home runs and two walks. The Threshers also committed the first of four errors in the inning which did not help the cause. Bear Hill came on in relief in the third inning after Benson pitched a scoreless second inning, but he would give up a solo home run in the third giving the Jays a 6-0 head start.

Ben Pfinsgraff surrendered six more runs to the Jays in his first outing of the year for Clearwater, and the Jays eventually lead 9-0 before the Threshers could get anything going. They would pick six before the game was over to make things semi-respectable, but all in all it was not the way they had hoped to start their second season.

They’ll head to Dunedin for one game on Friday night before returning to Clearwater to face the Jays for the final game of the series on Saturday night. We can all only hope that those next to games will have a different outcome than tonight.

The SCHMIDT LIST award goes to Johnny U! for his 3-4 night with a home run a double and 4 RBIs on the night. Brett Harker picks up an honorable mention for pitching the final 2.1 innings of the game giving up just one hit.
