Clearwater: The Week That Was …

Well, the big news out of Clearwater this week was Kyle Drabek’s complete game shut out, and his subsequent promotion to Double-A Reading. He made his debut there on Wednesday night going seven scoreless innings and getting his first AA win. Congrats to Kyle, we’ll miss you in Clearwater.

Since Jeff Crupper the normal reporter took his ball and went home, here is the week in review as the new Threshers reporter the Pooping dog recaps things. The pooping dog unveils a new ratings system this week. The ratings for each game, and then for the week as a total will range from 5 golden poops (best) to 5 smelly dumps (worst).

May 28th: Clearwater Crushes the Stone Crabs

Thursday night’s game was a thing of beauty for the faithful in Clearwater. It was 70’s night at the ballpark, and the Threshers came out winners as they CRUSHED the Rays new FSL affiliate the Charlotte Stone Crabs 10-1. Michael Cisco got the start for the Threshers and had his best outing of the year picking up his first win in four starts. He would go six innings giving up just one run on six hits fanning two and walking one. The game remained fairly tight until Cisco left the game with the Threshers clinging to a narrow 2-1 lead having picked up two on a Joel Naughton HR that drove in Michael Durant who had earned a rare walk in the second inning.

In the bottom of the sixth though, just after Michael Cisco’s final pitch the Threshers broke the game open getting five runs thanks mainly to a Grand Slam from Matt Rizzotti to make the game 6-1 and break it wide open. Cody Overbeck added a HR in the game, Dominic Brown earned three hits while scoring twice, and every Threshers player reached base at least once with Mike Durant the only player without a hit.

May 29th: Kyle Drabek Throws a Gem!

KYLE DRABEK IS KING TONIGHT!

After picking up three wins in his first three starts Kyle Drabek had to wait until his 10th appearance to get another, but it was a gem. He threw a complete game shutout of the Stone Crabs scattering just five hits over nine innings. He struck out seven and walked just one in the game.

The Threshers offense staked him to an early lead by loading the bases with no outs in the first inning, but were only able to get one run across before the inning was over. The game remained close until the seventh when the Clearwater offense was able to add another two runs with doubloes from Joel Naughton, Jesus Villegas-Andino and Arlon Quirosa to give the team some breathing room. THey added an insurance run in the eighth on Michael Durant double that scored Time Kennelly who had been running at the crack of the bat, and that was all the team would need.

Things got momentarily dicey in the ninth inning when the Stone Crabs got back-to-back singles with two outs, but Kyle Drabek got the next batter to fly out to center field and secured the win.

May 30th: Mets Rally to Down Threshers

The Clearwater Threshers headed to St. Lucie on Saturday night for their first meeting of the year with the St. Lucie Mets. Yohan Flande got the start for the Threshers and looked very good on the mound.

The offense staked him to an early 1-0 lead by grabbing a quick run in the top of the first inning. Cody Overbeck extended the lead with a solo blast in the fourth inning to make the lead 2-0, but the Mets answered in the fifth with a run to cut the Threshers lead back to a single run.

In the top of the seventh Derrick Mitchell put the sharks back up by two runs when he lead off the inning with a solo shot to make the game 3-1 in favor of Clearwater. That two-run lead would only last one inning as the Mets picked up a run in the eighth to cut the deficit back to one by getting a run off of reliever Darren Byrd who lasted just 2/3 of an inning giving up a run on two hits and a walk.

Michael Schwimer came on to record a strike out and end the eighth inning, and sent the game to the ninth inning. Jesus Villegas tapped a two-out double, but that was it for the offense, and Michael Schwimer returned to the hill for the bottom of the ninth.

The Mets got a leadoff double to start the inning, and then added two runs with one out to come from behind and send the Clearwater squad to the showers on the short end of this game.

Yohan Flande picked up the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his job on the mound.

May 31st: Mets Shut Out Threshers

Julian Sampson got the start for the Threshers on Sunday, but got no run support with the offense garnering just five hits in the game. The Mets got their second consecutive win shutting out the Threshers 6-0.

The SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award went unclaimed to end the month for the Threshers.

June 1st: Mets Top Threshers (Again)

The Clearwater Threshers were still looking for a win in Port. St. Lucie this year as they took on the Mets in the third game of the series. They lost a heartbreaker in the first game, and then got shut out in the second. In this third game they looked for a little redemption.

It was a pitcher’s dual however in the early going with both offenses getting just one combined hit through the first three frames. The Threshers got their first hit in the fourth when Tim Kennelly picked up a two-out double, but that was the end of the offensive explosion for the Threshers.

The Mets would break out first getting four runs before the Threshers were able to get on the scoreboard to make it 4-1 in the seventh inning, but that was where it ended as the Threshers took a third consecutive loss.

The SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award went unclaimed to end the month for the Threshers on Sunday, and again on Monday to start June.

June 2nd: Threshers Avoid a Sweep

The Clearwater Threshers had one final game with the Mets on Tuesday, and sorely needed a win to avoid the four-game sweep. Darren Byrd was back on the hill in a starting role for the first time in 2009, and had a solid outing. Byrd went four innings (pretty standard for a first start) and gave up just one run on three hits. The offense helped out as Derrick Mitchell got things started with a solo HR in the third to take the Threshers up 1-0.

The Mets would answer however with a run in the bottom of the third, but Dominic Brown then got the first of his two HR in the fourth to send the Threshers up 2-1, and they never looked back.

The score remained 2-1 until the sixth when Dominic Brown crushed his second HR scoring himself and Fidel Hernandez. Hernandez had an excellent night as well going 4-4 in the game.

The bullpen of Walter Tejeda, Josh Mackintosh, and Michael Schwimer took the game the rest of the way giving up just two hits and no runs over the final five frames.

June 3rd: Threshers Squeak One Out to Start a Winning Streak

One night after blasting two home runs to get the Threshers a win in St. Lucie Dominic Brown did not take long to get started on Wednesday as he crushed a two-run shot to put the Threshers up 2-0 in the first inning. From that point it would be a pitchers dual for the next five-and-a-half innings.

The Threshers added just one more hit through the sixth, and the Miracle could not get a run off of the Threshers starte Carlos Monasterios who gave up just two hits in his five innings of work while striking out five.

Manny Ayala relieved Monasterios in the sixth, and the Miracle finally picked up their first run of the game on two hits, a walk and a sac bunt to make the game 2-1 in favor of the Threshers after six.

That is where the game would remain until the bottom of the eighth inning when Sam Walls made his 2009 debut fresh off of the DL. The first hitter he faced tapped a single, but Walls was able to get out of the inning with no damage and the Threshers still winning 2-1.

The offense would go down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, and Michael Schwimer came on trying to protect the slim lead and earn his fifth save of the year. Schwimer would grab two quick strikeouts to start things, and induced a ground ball for the third out giving the Clearwater Threshers a two-game winning streak.

Carlos Monasterios & Dominic Brown split the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award.

Overall the Threshers were 4-3 on the week. Kyle Drabek was promoted to Double-A Reading, and Michael Cisco hit the DL after throwing his best game of the year. Since the team is on the road there has been no word about the injury, but we can only hope it is minor.

With the departure of Drabek and Cisco from the lineup Sam Walls was activated from the DL and appeared in one game throwing just one inning giving up a hit and stiking out one. Jason Mackintosh was sent down from Reading and pitched in 2.2 innings on Tuesday striking out three and giving up no hits. Darren Byrd returned to the starting lineup getting his first start this season on Tuesday after beginning the season on the DL and throwing four prior games from the pen.

The team remains in second place, but are 7.5 games out of first place with just 17 games remaining in the first half race.
